Placement criteria

The GDE uses school capacity and places learners in the following order:

  1. Learners who live in the school’s feeding area.
  2. Learners who have a brother or sister in the school (“previous school”).
  3. Learners whose parents work in the school’s feeding area.
  4. Learners living within 30 km of the school.
  5. Learners living further than 30 km from the school.

  • Learner’s birth certificate
  • Clinic immunisation card (Grade 1)

Parent and address documents

  • ID of parent(s)
  • Proof of home address next to the school
  • Proof of work address next to the school, where applicable
  • Municipal account not older than three months
  • Certified ID of the owner and the owner’s municipal account if renting
  • Signed employer confirmation letter and proof of work address
Important guidance

Apply carefully and honestly

Parents must apply at the school in their feeding area. Use the “Apply to More Schools” button to apply to other schools, especially when living outside the feeding area of a first choice.

Take note

The Department deals annually with fraudulent proof of residential address. Submitting false details compromises the integrity of the process.

Schools and the Department may ask for uploaded documents to be verified, accepted or declined. The Department may disqualify applications.
